The leaf of a deciduous plant consists of several layers. Cells with many chloroplasts are found in the deeper layers. The external tissue layer, the epidermis, protects the plant against moisture loss due to evaporation. It does not contain any chloroplasts and the cells appear transparent when viewed under the microscope. Densely packed cells extending upwards and containing numerous chloroplasts are found in the palisade layer. Below, it is followed by the spongy parenchyma, under which lies another epidermis functioning as a boundary tissue.

The leaf of a deciduous plant consists of various layers. Deep within are cells containing many chloroplasts. The external tissue layer protects the plant against evaporation losses, however, it must also enable an exchange of substances with the ambient air. The leaf needs to take up carbon dioxide and release oxygen and water vapor. There are specialized guard cells in the lower epidermis which make this happen.

Osmosis describes the phenomenon that solvent molecules move through a partially permeable membrane into a region of higher solute concentration. Thus, the concentration of solute is equalized on both sides. The experimental set-up consists of seven chambers that are filled with solutions of sugar with different concentrations. The liquid column in the capillaries is determined and the dependence of the osmotic pressure on the concentration can easily be shown.
